Definition of Beauty
We have an unwritten definition of “what is beauty” in our cultures. For instance, beautiful women will be slim, has red lips, smooth skin, light complexion, has good dress sense, confidence, etc. and the men should have good height, muscular or fit body, trimmed beard or clean shaved, should be intelligent, etc. but where this belief or conviction came from? In my opinion, the media and fashion industries are the main culprits who inject these kinds of thoughts into society. For example, in movies, soap operas, advertisements, or albums, we always see women and men embodying beauty. They are so perfect in every sense, which makes us feel (humans living in the real world) ashamed of ourselves or believe that we are not beautiful or less intelligent or weak. It will damage our self-respect, and we think of ourselves as less worthy or we are not perfect or incomplete human beings.
Children who have pimples, bald men, and women who have body hair is all-natural, and it’s a part of human being and what we have seen in movies that are actually unnatural and artificial. I saw a serial in which all man characters have trimmed and shaped beards as if they are cut in shape every day. Even if they wake up from the bed, their beard is still shaped, and women wear makeup even if they are at home. That is unreal. It’s all made up story by the people to sell their products and show us that we have a problem and can help us. When I saw soap operas, I saw the characters live a perfect life; they are so beautiful, they are intelligent, strong, cute, and live, eat, travel in a dream world, and after watching some of these operas, I feel a tiny bit of ashamed of myself. So how can we change that and show that each human being is different and there is no “god-given prophecy” of the beauty of the perfect human being? How can we change this belief?
In my opinion, the change should be happening from the same people responsible for this situation. Showing real life and real people in the movies, albums, and fashion industries will cause a significant shift in people’s beliefs. For instance, my bald friend has an inferiority complex about his baldness. Still, when a new, bald actor becomes a star and acts in movies without any wig, my friend’s mindset automatically changed, and he was no longer ashamed of his baldness.
